Experience

I attained a Bachelor's degree with a major in Industrial Psychology and minor in Education. After completion, to increase my preparation for working particularly with children with educational challenges, pursued a Master's degree in School Psychology of which I completed 23 credits. Once I became a parent, about 3 years later, I focused my interests on parenting, which led to 13 years of homeschooling. During the latter years of homeschooling I started and solely ran and after-school program and tutoring service for educationally challenged children in grades K-10th. As a homes-school teacher, I have had to maintain a portfolio of assessments and meet the required objectives of the Education Department for each grade level. This required excellent analytical skills in choosing and creating a curriculum and supplemental activities that would meet the learning objectives for each stage of development. I was also responsible for all the planning, teaching and testing of all core subjects. After listening to many stories of single mothers in my community in regards to their child's inability to achieve, I decided to start an after-school program for educationally challenged students with tutoring services. Advertising was not necessary as the program quickly grew from references. Through this program I was able to inspire and motivate all students to achieve their desired goals and have a different view on their ability to achieve. Parent counseling/ advising was often times necessary, especially for particular students, to also encourage mothers to be involved in the success of their children. I was a mentor not only to the children I served but to the mothers, helping to show them their need to stay involved with the educational development of their child. For a couple of students, I was able to work indirectly as part of a team in helping to fulfill requirements on the child's Individualized Educational Plan.
