Experience
Florida Department of Education Professional Educator’s Certificates: • English 9-12 • Exceptional Student Education (ESE) K-12 I’m Hazel and my students affectionately call me “Coach Sparrow.” For the past 20 years I have had the privilege of teaching in the classroom and providing one-on-one tutoring to learners of all ages. My students have described me as a positive, patient, and passionate educator! I began my teaching career in Massachusetts, and have taught English Language Arts, Intensive Reading, Writing, and Social Studies in Florida as well as in Maryland. I have taught middle and high school students and graduate level college courses. I have extensive experience in teaching children in the general/regular education classroom, and I am highly qualified to teach students with a wide range of special needs. I specialize in helping unmotivated, disengaged students – especially teenagers in grades 6-12 – to become active learners and achieve academic success. I offer one-on-one and group tutoring (up to four people). In addition to full-time classroom instruction, I am a former Learning Specialist and tutor in the Academic Support Center at Daytona State College. Also, I was a tutor for the Daytona Beach Community Development Corporation of Florida and am a former consultant with the University of Maryland and Boston Writing Projects. I have published articles in the online Daytona Beach News-Journal and The Deland-Deltona Beacon Newspaper.
